Mad Lilies’ step by step guide to creating your Christmas table setting…
Find a tablecloth or runner
The starting point for distinctive table styling is the tablecloth or table runner which acts as the base to your design. Carefully chosen linen can really offset your other items so it’s worth taking a bit of time to source the right style and feel. Think about the tactile texture of the material as well as the colour and design details.
Choose your flowers or plants
Using different containers, build up the scene with your florals. You might choose a selection of small potted plants, a collection of bottles filled with fresh flower and foliage stems or perhaps a combination of the two.
Create a runner of foliage along the table by layering up a couple of different types: eucalyptus and rosemary are great smelling or choose berried ivy for a more textured look.
The next layer to consider is your napkins – they not only act as a visual element but will serve a practical purpose. Again, think about the texture and make sure it fits in.
Tableware, Glasses and Cutlery
If your linen and florals are subtle in texture and colour then you may want more overstated choices in tableware, glasses and cutlery to balance the overall look. If you’re aiming for a distinctive tablescape design that will stand out from the crowd, don’t hold back!
The finishing touch: bring additional pops of colour using co-ordinating taper candles. Candlelight adds a magical atmosphere you can’t easily achieve with any other prop or styling technique.
