Memories in Bloom

A memorial garden will be installed in the gardens at The Horton Arts Centre in remembrance of Epsom’s forgotten residents, buried in unmarked graves in a local graveyard (at the intersection of Hook Road and Horton Lane) known as Horton Cemetery.

Over 900 commemorative ceramic flowers have been hand-painted by individuals in our community – from local school children to the Mayor of Epsom & Ewell – thanks to a powerful project, supported by Historic England, helping to raise awareness and restore dignity to the 9000+ abandoned psychiatric patients who were buried there from 1898 to 1955 in what was once the largest cluster of asylums in Europe.

Out of Sight Epsom – a group of local volunteers – ran art therapy ‘chat and craft’ workshops across the year, led by Dr. Alana Harris on behalf of charitable organisation, The Friends of Horton Cemetery to help revision the life histories of those buried at the abandoned site. And now, to coincide with World Mental Health Day on the 10th October they are inviting the community to see the unveiling of the ceramic flower installation and crowd-sourced Memorial Garden.
