Celebrate in Style
Nestled at Woodcote End, just moments from the world-famous Epsom Downs, The Durdans – built in the 1760s by Charles Dalbiac – has stood as a cornerstone of Epsom’s history for centuries.

It has long been a place of grandeur, hosting royalty, politicians and racing legends alike. Now, for the first time in its remarkable history, its beautiful grounds are available for private hire as an exclusive venue space called Green Gate Epsom.
This transformation marks an exciting new chapter and to delve deeper into its storied past and hear about its new future, we spoke to Claudia Jakubowski, Owner and Founder of CJ Events Studio who exclusively manage and run Green Gate.
Some remarkable figures are associated with The Durdans…
“The grounds of The Durdans has hosted an array of historic figures over the centuries. Charles II, Samuel Pepys, the great traveller Celia Fiennes and diarist John Evelyn are a few notable names linked to the estate. Perhaps the most significant is Archibald Primrose, the 5th Earl of Rosebery and a former Prime Minister. He purchased The Durdans in 1874 with one clear ambition – to win The Derby, the world’s greatest horse race. Given its proximity to Epsom Downs, it was the perfect racing base.”
Rumour has it that Lord Rosebery loved to party…
“One of his most famous traditions was hosting enormous tea parties under beautifully decorated marquees. Local archives contain stunning photographs of waitresses lined up to serve guests and records delicious food and entertainment provided. He embraced the beautiful landscaped gardens, using the flat lawns to host grand social gatherings. Heavily involved in politics as a Liberal Party leader, his love for The Durdans was undeniable and he often referred to it as his ‘delicious villa’ and spent over 50 years entertaining guests here.”
The guest lists were impressive too!
“They read like a who’s who of history! Randolph and Winston Churchill, members of the Russian Royal family, Edward, Prince of Wales, Queen Mary, various princes and princesses, and politicians from all parties also visited.”
And now, for the first time ever, the venue is available for hire…
“Yes, Green Gate marks an exciting new chapter for the historic estate, continuing its legacy of bringing people together. The grounds provide a stunning setting for weddings, corporate outdoor events, private celebrations, PR and brand activations and wellness events. The estate has even played host to films, shoots and adverts – including an iconic campaign with Naomi Campbell! Green Gate is available for hire all year round, ensuring exclusive use of the historic setting for a truly private experience.
