Let’s go… up the Downs

The Derby Festival may be the headline act but there’s plenty more to enjoy beyond race day…

Once the race crowds have gone and the track falls quiet, there’s a different kind of magic to discover on the Downs. From scenic walks, picturesque pubs and an ice cream van that’s held pitch since 1947, there’s plenty to enjoy, long after the final horse has crossed the finish line.

Where History Stands Tall

Full of historical charm, The Derby dates back to 1780. Wander past the three historic stands – including one of the oldest grandstands in Britain – and imagine the roar of race day pasts. Even on a quiet Sunday stroll, off-season, they still buzz with legacy and the drama lingers.

Lucky Location

The Amato on Chalk Lane (as it’s still known to many locals) belongs to the family-run, country pub group, The Grumpy Mole. Named after the horse who won the 1838 Derby, rumour has it that racegoers once dipped into a nearby well for luck – so a drink here still feels like you’re backing a winner!
