Sunlight streams into the listed building now home to Bordelaise, formerly The Rambling Pig. Set in the heart of Ewell Village, the restaurant offers a taste of southern France, brought to life by co-owner Olivier. The lively Frenchman moves between the mid-century tables and chairs, chatting with diners and topping up glasses. The vibe is relaxed, the welcome genuine and the setting full of character.

Along with vintage ‘Toile De Jouy’ style side plates, our starters arrive; classic onion soup with gratinated cheese toast soak up all the traditional flavours you’d expect from this signature French dish. Escargots – cooked in persillade butter – are served with chunks of warm toast while the salmon tartar with avocado and pomegranate is an ideal fresh and light palette cleanser.

Ready for mains? Book in advance, their Sunday roasts especially are very popular as is their premium beef grill; choose from onglet, flat iron, rump, rib-eye or côte de boeuf. Expect delicious beef-dripping hand-cut fries to accompany, alongside their signature Bordelaise jus, which is not to be missed!

Desserts do not disappoint and although their classic crème brûlée had just run out (the table in front ordered the last one and OMG, it looked absolutely dreamy!) a recommendation from their friendly staff of the apple tart tatin with homemade vanilla ice cream was a surprising hit; much lighter than expected, with just a hint of pastry, it was the perfect caramelised sweet note to finish on. Bon appétit!
